KUALA LUMPUR: The US Embassy here will tackle the global economic challenges with Asia, including Malaysia, following Senator Barack Obama’s victory in the presidential race. Ambassador James R. Keith said Obama would name his economic team soon to focus on the key issues involved. “In terms of Malaysia’s trade relationship with the US, we’ll be talking directly to the Malaysian Government about steps we can take to help expand trade between our two countries and do what we can to sustain each other’s economy in what looks like a difficult year ahead,” he told reporters at an “Election Watch” event hosted by the US Embassy at a hotel here. Keith said the incoming US administration would look at comprehensive engagement with all institutions in Asia, including Asean. “The Asean market has more than 500 million people, so it is important that we work closely with Malaysia and other (Asean) members,” he said. Addressing the packed hall earlier, Keith said the United States would uphold the mechanism of engagement “by sitting down and listening to our partners”. He believed the high voter turnout of between 130 million and 150 million reflected the desire for change by Americans. The crowd included diplomats and local and international college students.
