Rock Band Developer Harmonix Plans Music Creation Game

No surprise considering they did Amplitude and Frequency as well. By Kyle Stallock, 08/23/2008

With the music creation tool in the upcoming Guitar Hero World Tour getting a lot of attention, the lack of anything similar in it competitor Rock Band 2 increasingly stands out. Harmonix, current developers of the latter and the previous developers of the former, know this very well, but they're not about to cobble one together and just toss it in.

In a story over on the MTV Multiplayer Blog Speaking to the Multiplayer blog, John Drake, from Harmonix's public relations department, said they didn't want to rush out a music creation tool and do it "half-assed." Further explaining that "this is definitely a full-on project for us."

Drake also noted how committed the company is to the genre of music-based games, pointing out there are over 40 bands in the company and 85% of the employees play an instrument. He additionally said that music creation has been talked about before and that they have already implemented similar features in their past titles Amplitude and Frequency.

While there's no discounting their pedigree in the music genre, from everything we've seen Guitar Hero's music creation tool looks anything but "half-assed." It's easy to forget that due to the big breakup this is just the first sequel for Rock Band, and they clearly focused on making it with a "more of what worked the first time" approach.
