New kart racer inspired by Little Big Planet focuses on player-generated content. By Kris Pigna, 06/02/2009
Developed by United Front Games, they're making Mod Nation Racers in the "play, create, share" model of Little Big Planet. Indeed, the game basically looks like a cross between LBP and Mario Kart -- players create and customize their own karts and racers, and the big hook is a track editor. As it was demonstrated on stage, a player lays out the track itself by driving around a large expanse, with the track being laid out behind them. Once the track is set, players can change the track type (making portions of it into a dirt track, for instance), add scenery items on the sides like trees and houses, and place power-up items on the track itself. Like LBP, it all at least appeared to be pretty intuitive and easy to use.
Once the racing started, it looked like pretty standard Mario Kart-style gameplay, with power slides and weapon pick-ups. And although they didn't confirm it, Mod Nation Racers appeared to be a PSN game. It's due for release in 2010.
