A few big announcements spoiled, but Sony had some tricks up their sleeves. By Steve Watts, 06/02/2009
Final Fantasy XIV Announced, Exclusive to PS3
Just as Final Fantasy XIII for Xbox 360 was the blow-out announcement of last year's show, Sony made the so-called "megaton" of their conference with the announcement of Final Fantasy XIV Online. Sony CEO Jack Tretton announced that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, and coming in 2010. The trailer looked similar to the style of Final Fantasy XI, so it appears to be another MMO similar to that game. But with a release date coming up so quickly, we're likely to see some more concrete details very soon.
Motion Control Completes the Trifecta
Not to be outdone by Microsoft's Natal project, Sony showed off their own motion control. Using an upgraded PlayStation Eye and a wand with contextually changing colors, the tech demo showed off how the Eye could make the wand appear as different objects on screen, like tennis rackets, guns, or whips. The player can then interact with objects in the game world, like firing a gun using the trigger on the wand. The demo also showed off a knight battle, where the camera recognized the placement of a sword and shield on the player's body. It's targeting a Spring 2010 release, so we'll see what comes of it then.
God of War 3 Gets (Even More) Brutal
We've already seen God of War 3 on a few occasions, but this time we saw it in action for an extended period. The developers took on the first few minutes of the game, which had Kratos traversing obstacles using Harpies as swing points, using his arrows to pick of distant enemies, and spilling the entrails of a particularly unlucky boss. The Santa Monica-based studio confirmed that the game is set to release in March 2010, and we'll be playing the demo on the show floor to give you our own thoughts.
Rockstar PS3 Project Revealed
We've heard rumors for months on a Rockstar project that would be exclusive to the PlayStation 3, and it's finally been revealed. The game is titled Agent, and the globetrotting adventure takes place in the 1970s. With any luck we'll have more details soon, but for right now all we have is the good faith of Rockstar's Sam Houser. "We have always enjoyed making action games, and with Agent we are making what we believe will be the ultimate action game," he said.
Sony Shows Off Trico, "The Last Guardian"
Though we got a sneak peak at the trailer a little early, Sony has confirmed development of The Last Guardian, also known to fans as Trico. The trailer shown at E3 was extended a bit, but had several familiar scenes to what we had seen from the leaked one. It's set for a 2010 release.
New Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil PSP Titles
Microsoft didn't get the only big Metal Gear announcement this week. As part of their PSP line-up, Sony revealed Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. Creator Hideo Kojima pointed out that it shouldn't be looked upon as a side-story, since he'll be working on the script with the team behind Metal Gear Solid 4. The game takes place 10 years after Metal Gear Solid 3 as Big Boss forms Outer Heaven. Curiously, there were multiple Snakes in a few scenes, which could have all sorts of plot and/or gameplay implications.
Also at the conference was a mention of a new Resident Evil game being designed specifically for the PlayStation Portable. There isn't much to go on besides that, however, so for now you'll just have to let your imagination fill in the blanks with zombies.
Final Fantasy VII Ported to PSP, Available Today
What's a press conference without a few surprises that the fan base can take advantage of immediately? The Sony conference confirmed the PSP port of Final Fantasy VII, and said it would be available for download today. Not mentioned at the conference, but also available starting today, is the original Medal of Honor.
Sony "Unveils" PSP Go
Surprising absolutely no one, but at least carrying themselves with good humor about it, Sony officially confirmed the PSP Go. Kaz Hirai mentioned it was the "worst-kept secret of E3," and showed off the device. It looks like the leaks we recently saw, but Hirai insists that the downloadable focus won't be the death of UMD. Sony is committed to supporting both it and the PSP 3000 side-by-side (also known as appeasing the retail chains). It features 16 GB of internal memory and an M2 memory port, as well as bluetooth connectivity. It will also be coming with "Media Go," a music matching software, and native video delivery support for both it and the PSP 3000. All PSP titles are expected to be available both digitally and in stores starting after its launch on October 1 in North America in Europe, or November 1 in Japan. The price might be the sticking point for some, however, as it's launching at the price point that the original PSP went for at first: $249.99.
Gran Turismo Shown for PSP and PS3
Sony's conference was bookended with racing, putting Gran Turismo Mobile at the front and Gran Turismo 5 near the end. Mobile is coming October 1 alongside the PSP Go launch, and features 60 frames per second speed with 800 cars and 35 tracks. Players can share cars and play with other racers ad hoc, but probably not online. Then came its older brother. Gran Turismo 5 was shown, boasting partnerships with NASCAR and the World Rally Championship. It also showed off some vehicle damage, a first for the series and another peg in making it more realistic.
Mod Nation Racers Shown, is Adorable
In much less serious racing game news, Sony showed off a new title called Mod Nation Racers. It takes after the spirit of Little Big Planet, letting players customize their characters and create their own tracks using an easy-looking stage editor tool kit. Creators can test their custom tracks on the fly, and put in power-up items similar to those found in the Mario Kart series. It's hard to tell right now if it's going to be a Blu-ray or PSN release, but we'll find out more as it comes. Right now it's scheduled for a release in 2010.
Assassin's Creed 2 PSP Connectivity
We received an extended gameplay viewing of Assassin's Creed 2 from Ubisoft, during which it was revealed that the game will feature cross-platform functionality. By playing the PSP game Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines, players can unlock six exclusive weapons for AC2.
MAG Still Massive
A short gameplay session was held for MAG, dropping the ridiculous subtitle but keeping the premise of "massive action." The creators let us see a session in progress with 256 players, and it ran smoothly. We'll get our own hands on it at the show floor and let you know if our experience matches up.
Not at the Conference...
Though Sony talked Metal Gear, they didn't mention that Metal Gear Solid Rising is going to be coming for the PlayStation 3 as well, as Tretton confirmed after the conference. We also heard word that Ken Kutaragi was in attendance at the Sony press conference, but wasn't on stage. Finally, many expected some appearance of the rumored PS3 Slim, which didn't make its debut. It could still be out there, but it definitely wasn't presented yet. (Which we totally called.)
