May NPDs: Console Sales Drop All Around

Plus, an impressive debut for UFC 2009 Undisputed and EA Sports Active. By Steve Watts, 06/12/2009

    UFC 2009 Undisputed

May didn't pack many sales surprises for hardware, as most of the consoles retained their relative positions to each other. The PlayStation 2 swapped spots with the PlayStation 3, dropping back down after an April boom due to its price drop and seeming to normalize again. Meanwhile the DS dropped sharply from a burst of sales in April due to the launch of the DSi. Every other system saw a moderate decrease from April, except for the Xbox 360 which oddly stayed at exactly the same number. As noted by the NPD group, May is usually one of the lowest months of the year, so this trend isn't surprising. This is the first month in almost two years that overall sales have gone below the $1 billion mark, but high sales in 2008 make this seem more a return to normalcy.

Even though the DS slumped a little from its DSi debut, it still sold more than all non-Nintendo systems combined. If you add the Wii in for overall Nintendo hardware sales, they outmatch all the other systems combined by almost 400,000 units.

    May 2009 Hardware Sales

    • Nintendo DS -- 633,500
    • Wii -- 289,500
    • Xbox 360 -- 175,000
    • PlayStation 3 -- 131,000
    • PlayStation 2 -- 117,000
    • PlayStation Portable -- 100,400

    April 2009 Hardware Sales

    • Nintendo DS -- 1,040,000
    • Wii -- 340,000
    • Xbox 360 -- 175,000
    • PlayStation 2 -- 172,000
    • PlayStation 3 -- 127,000
    • PlayStation Portable -- 116,000

Software sales, on the other hand, seemed perfectly healthy for the time of year. UFC 2009 Undisputed for Xbox 360 came out fighting and took the top spot with nearly double the sales of the second-place contender. Combining the 360 and PS3 sales of the game, it easily sold over a million copies. The fighter that didn't fair so well was Little Mac, who despite an aggressive and nostalgia-filled marketing campaign could only push Punch-Out!! to 8th place with just over 150,000 sales. Then again, Nintendo has a proven track record of sustaining a slow burn for its games, so we may see it showing for months to come.

Finally, while Nintendo generally dominates the software charts with their own first-party software, May showed EA hitting it big with EA Sports Active. The game ranked third on the charts and even almost overtook Wii Fit. If it continues to sell strong, we may even see it showing up in June's numbers.
