Rockstar announced today that Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be coming to the PlayStation Portable this fall. This version promises to take advantage of the PSP hardware, with a graphical upgrade and new story missions. It will also help Sony kick off the emphasis on digital distribution, as it will be available both via UMD and through the PlayStation Network. "Rockstar's work with the GTA series has been an enormous part of the success of PlayStation platforms," said Sony's Jack Tretton in the press release. "We're excited to welcome the critically acclaimed Chinatown Wars to the oustanding line-up of great games headed to the PSP platform this fall."

Apparently, PlayStation platforms might have a hand in the success of the GTA series as well. Despite the critical acclaim that Tretton referred to, Chinatown Wars for DS had a less-than-stellar sales launch, and despite optimism from Nintendo we really haven't seen adoption pick up. It's hard to tell if this move is due to the low sales or if Chinatown Wars was always intended to be a timed exclusive, but either way Rockstar has to be glad for the chance to recoup some of their development costs.
