If the PSP Go's price point and focus on digital distribution didn't already out it as Sony's answer to the Apple iPhone, recent comments from SCEA PR manager Al De Leon certainly do. He told CNET (via CVG) that the "significant reduction in the (cost of) development tools" was intended to broaden the scope of what developers do with the device. "It will be mostly games," he said, "but there's certainly an opportunity to look at some non-gaming applications." He didn't specify what kinds of non-gaming applications he envisions for the future of the PSP Go, but this definitely puts it more in line as a direct competitor to Apple's device.

The iPhone, by contrast, has an open development platform that has already driven countless apps to it. On the other hand, the market is so flooded that some customers have a difficult time finding which ones are worthwhile. By offering developers the chance to make similar applications without quite as much noise from competition, users could benefit from having a clean selection of non-gaming applications.
