Lawrence Kasanoff seeking to "preserve his IP rights" for the franchise. By Kat Bailey, 06/25/2009
The motion comes from Threshold Entertainment's Lawrence Kasanoff, who seeks to "preserve his IP rights" when it comes to certain Mortal Kombat characters, as well as the right to create film and television based on the franchise. Kasanoff originally helped bring the franchise to the movies.
Kasanoff claims that he and Threshold were the driving forces behind Mortal Kombat's ascent from being "just a video game."
The lawsuit says that "Theshold's input was especially important with respect to the characters inhabiting the Mortal Kombat universe -- including, without limitation, core characters such as Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Scorpion."
Kasanoff was the producer of the two films, which were released in 1995 and 1997 respectively. He's also responsible for "television series, the animated series, platinum selling soundtracks, home video, Internet, CD-Roms and the live tour."
