For all the talk of games as art these days, sometimes all you really want to do is shoot a few hundred disgusting monsters in their stupid, stupid faces. Back in 2001, you couldn't do much better than Serious Sam for your fix of ludicrous violence. Now developer Croteam is prepping their over-the-top shooter for its Xbox Live Arcade debut later this summer.

Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD is an enhanced remake of the original FPS, complete with updated graphics and four player online co-op. "We are really excited to update our hero and recreate Sam in stunning high definition for Xbox LIVE Arcade players," Croteam CEO Roman Ribaric enthused. "The fans have lobbied us hard to do this, so we are stoked about bringing Sam back as big, bold, and bad as he ever was."

It's too bad Sam's one-liner-spewing brother-in-absurdity Duke Nukem Forever will probably never see the light of day. A retooled Serious Sam isn't a bad consolation prize, though -- the guy is essentially an even more ridiculous, Croatian-made Duke.
