New iPhone stripped, searched and costed
The new iPhone 3G S mobile phone has been taken apart and costed by the market intelligence outfit iSuppli. Apparently, the new 3G S handset costs $178.96 to produce which is only around $4 more than a 3G. It is also only $8 more than Palm's new Pre, according to the Mobile Whack website.
When you consider that Apple upgraded a range of internal components for the new 3G S, this figure surely means that Apple is looking to squeeze more profit from its new 3G S mobile - especially as more than one million of the new designs have already been sold.
"From a component and design perspective, there's a great deal of similarity between the 3G and the 3GS. By leveraging this commonality to optimize materials costs and taking advantage of price erosion in the electronic component marketplace, Apple can provide a higher-performing product with more memory and features at only a slightly higher materials and manufacturing cost," said Andrew Rassweiler, director and principal analyst, teardown services, for iSupp.
