Nokia, Samsung, Apple and others to utilise European standard
In an effort to both simplify and save resources - a move that runs parallel to the numerous green devlopments out and forthcoming, such as the eco-charger from Kondor - a new, universal standard for mobile phone power supplies will come into operation in Europe next year, based on the micro USB format. According to the Reuters website, the companies involved in the agreement include: Nokia, Samsung, LG, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Apple, Research in Motion, NEC, Qualcomm and Texas Instruments. Many believed that the new standard wouldn't come into play until 2012.
"People will not have to throw away their charger whenever they buy a new phone," said EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen. "We're assuming this new European initiative will have a knock-on effect globally and manufacturers won't just be doing this on the European market."
The new charger connection standard will not be truly universal, however. The agreement has only been made to cater for those phones which are data-enabled. This means that basic mobile phones will not be included and will retain their own, unique, charger connection.
