The much hyped "Spectacular" panel started with a bang and ended with a whimper, followed by nerd rage. By Sam Kennedy, 07/24/2009
So what was talked about? The panel started with video about Star Wars The Concert, and that tickets will be going on sale on August 1st. It looked a lot like Videogames Live!, the concert that goes on tour showcasing clips from games while a live orchestra plays the music. Same goes for here with clips from the movies while an orchestra, you guessed it, plays music from the film. Following this was when Steve Sansweet took the stage to announce that there is a plan to have Star Wars Celebration next summer, considering that it's the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, but no announcement of WHERE it is going to be, so don't start booking your hotels and flights just yet.
Then came the news that we were expecting, that Star Wars: The Force Unleashed was going to receive some DLC to expand upon a game that has been out for nearly a year. An odd move, but still, it's some fun content -- especially considering most can pick up this game for around $20 bucks now. The downloadable level will take place on Tattooine and feature popular locals such as Jabba's Palace. Additionally, it was announced that the game will be coming out to PC and MAC and be repackaged with The Ultimate Sith Edition tagline. It will feature the player taking the role of The Secret Apprentice, playing on Hoth, but during an alternate storyline that features you doing the Emperor's bidding. Sounds cool, but no pricing was announced regarding this edition of the game, or how many hours will be added to the game. What was shown were a few boss battles with Luke Skywalker and Boba Fett, perhaps also cashing in on the fact that Empire is celebrating its 30th next year.
The panel then teetered into more news about The Clone Wars Season Two and how it is being design to be a more mature take on the new series. It looks like they might be trying to bring in some of the Star Wars fans in from off the fence who have been passing the series off as too geared towards kids. The odd change in the standard show format from years past was that only a handful of questions were handled via the pre-taped segments from fans who submitted questions via a web-cam. Apparently, fans had to film themselves asking a question and then submit it to G4, that was then randomly chosen and answered by Clone Wars Director, Dave Filoni.
These questions ranged from "will Obi Wan show up?" and even the absurd "will we see characters like Jango Fett?" Where these really the best questions they could find? Did anyone want to tell the fan who asked the Jango Fett question that he died in Episode II? The sad part is that there was never an open floor mic set up for Q&A, a standard practice for this panel. A lot of fans camp out most of their day just to make it into Hall H (me being one of them), and then to show favor to fans who were not even here strikes an odd chord with this Star Wars.
And that pretty much wrapped up the panel as a whole. There was no brand new game announced, nothing about Star Wars coming to blu-ray, and no news about the long in development television series. Maybe next Comic-Con LucasFilm will decide to actually announce something and bring the microphone back to the show floor so the fans can ask their questions live outside of a poorly scripted and unorganized panel.
