These instructions are for installing a floppy drive in a home-built computer with a standard 3.5-inch drive bay. Instructions Difficulty: Moderately Challenging Steps 1 Step One Remove faceplate from bay that will house floppy drive. 2 Step Two Position drive in the new space, or slide it into brackets, if any. 3 Step Three Connect motherboard ribbon cable to drive. Match red stripe on ribbon cable with Pin 1 (left bottom pin) on drive connector. If cable has a twist in one end, connect other end to floppy drive. 4 Step Four Connect power supply cable to power supply connector (this will usually be the smallest of the connectors hardwired to the power supply). 5 Step Five Secure drive with screws (to case or brackets). 6 Step Six Attach brackets to case, if necessary. 7 Step Seven Make sure drive fits properly and cable connections are snug. 8 Step Eight Connect ribbon cable to floppy drive controller on motherboard. Consult motherboard manual if you need help locating floppy drive controller. 9 Step Nine Follow instructions in motherboard manual to set up floppy drive in BIOS. 10 Step Ten Test new drive with floppy disk. Tips & Warnings Save drive bay faceplate for unanticipated needs. If possible, do installation in an uncarpeted area. If you do not understand these instructions or you lack good manual dexterity, have a qualified technician install the floppy drive for you.
